Contrib: Attendance
LTI Attendance Tool

Native Attendance Tool
For information on an Attendance tool recently developed by the University of Dayton that incorporates many of the features listed below, please go see their github page. https://github.com/UDayton/attendance
Purpose
We are putting together some specifications and designs for a new tool that will track student's attendance. The idea is to have a simple table that lists each day the class meets where a teacher can insert in attendance records for each student. I've heard there's been some interest in the community for a tool like this and it would be great to get the community involved. I'm hoping to get input from everyone about any ideas or features they'd like to see. Also, any collaboration with design, UI, or internationalization would help a lot.
Suggested Features
Please add additional features, but do not remove any.

This would be helpful for instructors in the Spanish and Portuguese department at Indiana University who use a commercial gradebook package called Micrograde. It has an attendance function that is much like the spreadsheet you describe.
It's my understanding that the LectureTools software developed and in use at the University of Michigan (with Sakai integration) has an attendance function, too. (https://www.lecturetools.com).
In large classes, it would be useful to be able to upload/create room-specific seating charts, so that instructors could mark those absent simply by clicking the empty seats.

It would be useful to have the option to turn on an "Add Attendance Sheet " option right from the Gradebook instead of having to add yet another tool/page. It could extend the metaphor of the little black book that instructors physically carry-- a single book with two pages (grades and attendance) for each class. It could also downplay "administrivia" look and feel of the site to students so that they don't have to see Attendance in the site navigation. Linking to the Gradebook will be key for our instructors.
Quick thought about the challenges involved with section/group dependency. If Student Q starts out in Section 001 that meets on Monday and Wednesday but then transfers to Section 002 which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, what will happen to her MW data? Presumably, it wouldn't transfer to TTH. Would it just disappear?

In my belief this tool is overdue for development, so hats off to longsight for getting it going!
I don't think the "moving student" in Diana's comment would present to much of a challenge - the output display for such a student could just include the attendance prior to the move (ie 2 columns in a table rather than 1)
Attendance would have to be group aware such that a tutor (or similar) would track their assigned students.
But large classes would be a challenge - maybe couple attendance to sms (but that does not stop student Q (attending) sms-ing Student A (absent) the "code" to register attendance)
In addition, the ability to keep a track attendance at lectures, practicals, tutorials etc is, in my belief, a critical component of a student "warning system". In combination with marks from Gradebook a student at risk of failing a course/module might be determined sufficiently early in the semester/term for assistance/support to be offered. So I think Diana's suggestion of an attendance sheet in GB has ALOT of merit.

We just had a request from an instructor for this type of tool.
He wants something that he can click on a day, see the list of students and toggle them absent.
What's the progress on this.

Hi,
I'm Alaa NIZAR, IIHEM-Morocco
I'm interested in testing and internationalization.
We were using Post'em tool to achieve the result, BUT NOT as clear and concise as this tool.
Thank you,
Yours,
