Welcome to the Teaching and Learning (T&L) Group!

The T&L Group Mission

To drive innovation on teaching and learning within the Sakai community. To share best practices, understandings and experiences among faculty members themselves and between faculty and other Sakai community members. To communicate the goals and issues of the teaching and learning community to contributors in Sakai including developers, UX (user experience), system administrators, documentation, support, and QA (quality assurance).

Hello and welcome! This confluence site is the gathering place for folks interested in teaching, learning and assessment within the Sakai community. We are actively looking for more folks to contribute so please wonder around and jump in wherever you wish.  You may also want to join the "Teaching and Learning" (i.e. "pedagogy") discussion group. The Sakai Learning Capabilities v 1.0 document has been released. This document is the culmination of months of work by the the Sakai Teaching & Learning Community via conference calls and virtual meetings. Discussions at the last conference were the catalyst for this work. Now we anticipate this work will a catalyst for Sakai 3 design and development.


At the Sakai Conference 2010 in Denver, we will hold a preconference workshop during the afternoon of Monday, June 14th. We hope to give Sakai instructors and instructional designers an opprtunity to share specific and concrete techniques, in any context, tool, or workflow, for teaching and learning on the Sakai platform. The Teaching and Learning Group has been engaged in an "instructional visioning" exercise focused on Sakai 3 for the past several months.  Much of our recent work has involved the generation of a Learning Capabilities document.  We have reach a point in this process where we feel we need have a sustained and focused effort in order to organize and refine this document and "take it to the next level". 

We have  finalized the plans for our next round of Virtual Working Sessions which will be focused on completing the Learning Design Lenses and Facets work.  We've scheduled two 5-hour sessions for Thursday, May 6 and Friday, May 7 that will run from 12 Noon to 5 PM EDT.  If we complete the work on Thursday we may cancel Friday or use it to begin new work.  We will be using a combination for Google Docs and a phone conference, details will be posted as we approach the event.

2010 Teaching with Sakai Innovation Award

The Sakai Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the 2010 Teaching with Sakai Innovation Awards. Winners in the 3rd annual competition are:

First Prize: Scott Bowman, Juvenile Justice, Texas State University-San Marcos

Second Prize: Sally Knipe, Transitions in Middle Schooling, Charles Sturt University

Honorable Mention: Joshua Danish, Computational Technologies in Educational Ecosystems, Indiana University Bloomington

Honorable Mention: Karen Swenson, Introduction to Science Fiction and Fantasy, Virginia Tech

Each of the winners will be presenting their use of Sakai for teaching and learning at the Sakai Conference in Denver, Colorado on June 15 - 17, 2010.
