Welcome to the Teaching and Learning (T&L) Group!

Hello and welcome! The confluence site is the gathering place for folks interested in teaching and learning within the Sakai community. We are a "young" group and thus much of what you find here will be a work in progress. We are actively looking for more folks to contribute and add to this community effort so please wonder around and join in in any way you want.

Teaching and Learning Community Mission

NOTE: The following is a working draft of a mission statement that was developed during a "community gathering" at the Sakai Conference in Newport Beach, CA in December 2007.

To drive innovation on teaching and learning within the Sakai community. To share best practices, understandings and experiences among faculty members themselves and between faculty and other Sakai community members. To communicate the goals and issues of the teaching and learning community to contributors in Sakai including developers, UI, system administrators, documentation, support, QA.

Gathering and Sharing Teaching and Learning Practices

Teaching & Learning Repository

The Sakai T&L community is attempting to determine the best way to gather and share "teaching and learning practices" among users of Sakai. As of February, 2008, we have decided to combine efforts with the already established OSP Community Library which will be generalizing its repository to foster the collection of T&L resources from Sakai, OSP, AAC&U and other groups and projects, following the inter-project model of Fluid.  Teaching with Sakai Pre-Conference Session (Paris, June 30, 2008 from 1 PM to 4 PM)

Session Overview: This session will provide participants with examples of how instructors are using Sakai to meet a range of instructional needs in face-to-face, blended and fully online courses.  In addition, models for professional development and training on use of Sakai will be shared.  Input and ideas from participants will also be sought in order to grow the recently launched Sakai teaching and learning repository

From 2006 

In order for Sakai to mature as a set of tools and a framework to support teaching and learning, there are a number of things that need to be explored:

  • Interoperability
  • Ease of Authoring
  • Providing a Quality Learning Experience
  • Tracking Performance
  • Lowering the Barrier to Use
  • Add your concern/question here...
  • Well, what about questions like "How does the Sakai toolset relate to problem-based learning?" or "Why is the Sakai toolset so much better for constructivist learning than (e.g.) Blackboard?" (Wytze Koopal)

If we actually compare Blackboard with Sakai (not on the level of functionality) it might be summarized as Blackboard having a metaphor of traditional instruction (the page turning model of e-learning), whereas Sakai is about collaboration. Students can work together on meaningful, real-life assignments. It comes to experiential learning from rich learning tasks. The learning model is based on cooperative en collaborative construction of knowledge. Components such as Wiki and Blogs fit very well within a learning concept in which everyone is engaged and encouraged to participate (Stanley Portier).

This worksite will be used to explore issues related to providing support for good pedagogy in Sakai. The following projects and areas of exploration are part of this discussion:
