Sakai, as an open-source software solution, provides a flexible and free alternative to commercial LMSs. Most faculty still use the LMS to perpetuate the old college teaching "sage on the stage" paradigm, but more and more innovative teachers are making use of other web 2.0 tools, open educational resources, mobile devices, and electronic textbooks. These new practices have the potential to increase student engagement, promote deeper learning, and reduce costs in higher education, but they also present their fair share of challenges, since they do not "reside" in the LMS.
This BOF will expose some trends and practices in open education and social media for teaching and learning to engage the audience in a discussion about these practices, and to explore what the role of Sakai should be to support, promote, track, and assess them.
