IMS Learning Design is a specification for describing learning activity 'flows'. IMS Simple Sequencing is an older specification for describing learning content 'flows'. And LAMS is an implementation for authoring and executing learning 'flows' in a learning management system.
Sakai contains a course material authoring environment Melete that allows for time-based sequencing of materials by controlling availability of components to students by date/time.
A useful project might implement a workflow service in Sakai and support a number of activity and content 'flows' for use cases in learning and teaching, research and also administration. A key requirement will be intuitive authoring of sequences and intuitive user experience of working through a sequence. An ability to grade work and communicate with the gradebook will be required as will support for ad-hoc groups and sections.
