Taggable UI Designs

The 2.4 release of Sakai will include a tagging manager that will allow any tool to register itself either as tagging "provider" and/or a taggable activity "producer".

The only tool that will be registering as a tag provider in 2.4 will be the Goal Management tool from the Syracuse Goal Management contrib module. The Goal Management tool will tell the tagging manager that it exists and is able to provide "goal" tags.

The only tools that will be registering as a taggable activity producer in 2.4 will be Assignment and OSP wizards in the distributed release and the Data Point tool from the Syracuse Goal Management contrib module.

In 2.4, the tagging manager is going to live in the assignment tool and, as such, will come with the distribution.

The design is such that OOTB, a typical Sakai user and administrator will not see anything different. The assignment tool's new functionality is not available until a tagging provider registers with the tag manager. That can currently only happen if the Goal Management contrib module is added to the mix.

We believe that managing metadata entities, their scope (application with Sakai) and the application of metadata to other entities is going to be very important for our instance of Sakai. At Syracuse, we tag learning activities and assessment items with outcome metadata (Goals) so that we can easily view a program's curriculum structure as it pertains to a variety of those stated learning outcomes. However, this concept of application of metadata to Sakai items may have implications beyond our own use. Figure 3 illustrates a future scenario where there are other producers and providers or metadata in the mix.
