Update on Design Pattern Library
Screen Shots
Sheila Crossey at the University of Toronto has been tracking the third party screen shot issue. She is retiring from University of Toronto and Allison spent some time in the last week working with her to clarify the screen shot policy before she left. Allison also consulted with a law professor at UCB, as well as members of the Yahoo UI Pattern Authors group.
Their current thinking is that the use of screen-shots of third-party interfaces is within the doctrines of fair-use (US) and fair-dealing (Commonwealth Nations + others) doctrine.
Specifically fair-use contains the idea that reproduction of work for criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research is not a breach of copyright. This would seem to cover their use in a Pattern Library.
The proposed policy is currently being reviewed by some members of the Fluid board.
It has been proposed that the Pattern Library will also have a clearly posted take down policy similar to YouTube's policy that a third-party can request that a reference that they claim infringes on their copyright be removed.
Screen shots will be posted with clear citations of their source.
Unrelated it was suggested that screen-shots in the Pattern Library should be clearly tagged with the date that they were captured since the web changes so quickly.
New items on Sakai UX Issues and Discussions
No new items since Feb 8th, 08
Date Widget and Pager are being actively worked on by Erin (Erin to post updates to the page)
We need to keep the list up.
Allison brings up a couple of items to add to the list:
- Lengthy discussion of WYGIWYG mode: Dev and UI list and Pedagogy. (Eli will write up)
- Use of URLs with in Sakai. (Eli will write up)
Update on the Pager
There is an ongoing Fluid project looking at different paging patterns for fairly near-term use in Sakai. Smart Page Navigation (aka Pager)
Erin and Barbara have been doing some user testing of three designs.
The results have been reviewed by Allison and Daphne. The user tests did not expose a winner. Current thinking is that the user testing methodologies need to be revised to get better results. Specifically the tasks were too narrowly focused and did not engender a broad enough range of behaviors.
Allison and Daphne have suggested additional tasks and protocols.
The group discussed that a broader set of tasks might be too time consuming and it was proposed that instead there could be a deeper evaluation and analysis of the designs by the group which could result in another round of user tests to test the conclusions of the analysis.
There was some discussion of the need to make an assessment of not only the usability of the designs as presented but also an understanding of the types of tasks and context which might call for the use of one pattern over another.
There was also a brief discussion of the specific designs.
U-Camp at the Paris Sakai Conference
The group decided that we should use this meeting to do additional planning for the Paris U-Camps and that this should be an agenda item for the next meeting.
There is a page started for planning. Please contribute: http://bugs.sakaiproject.org/confluence/display/UI/UCamp+-+Paris
Note taker rotation: Allison, Barbara, Daphne, Eli, Erin, Jackie, Judy, Julie, Kathy, Shaw-Han, Tim, Will
Note to note taker: On the UX DG Home page, please make these notes the "Notes from previous meeting" link and increment the next meeting date and "Agenda" link (in that same section). From the "Agenda" link, you should link to a copy of this page (there is a "Copy" function in the Info tab), the title of which should be the next meetings date (e.g. 2008-02-20 Agenda and Notes). Be sure to make this a sub-page of Meetings. Update the agenda with any known items and included To Do's Strip out the notes section. (And always leave this note on ever Notes page for the next note-taker.)
