While I'm not actually volunteering (yet), I have an example of how to
test this. At UM we are considering a new skin for CTools, and as usual
are pressed to decide "if it's good" as quickly as possible.

Today I designed a comparative user test, conducted the test with 8
subjects, and analyzed user testing results from comparing the current
CTools skin to a new one that has been proposed. IN A SINGLE DAY. This
is really possible and I encourage you all to try it.

The goal of this test was to measure how accurately users can identify
their current location, all the clickable items on a page, and the
function that will be performed if they click on particular user
interface control (like the "Reset" icon).

I've attached my report that includes the method, the questions, the
responses, the analysis, my recommendations, the free-form comments
from users, and of course both screen designs. I think there are some
useful findings in here for this discussion, but mainly I wanted you
all to see this as an example of a quick test with real users that you
can run.
