Paper 5

The Purpose of Sakai

Sakai is a community of institutions and other interested parties that has come together to address the needs of its members for online collaborative tools to support teaching, learning, and research.

Sakai OOB should contain enough features to impress and engage new users, should have exemplary usability, and should be bug-free and reliable. A major function of the Sakai organisation (Foundation?) will be to ensure this is delivered.

The workings of Sakai should be open and transparent to all. The code should be open-source with a liberal license to encourage adoption and to allow the product to be strengthened by third-party contributions.
