Sakai and Open CourseWare Systems

This is the start of a page on Sakai and its interaction with OCW systems. I'm (Joseph Hardin) in the process of setting up a DG, and would like to talk with others interested in this topic at the Baltimore conference.

Greetings. At MIT I'm working on a project, CWSpace, that is investigating the archiving of MIT OpenCourseWare in DSpace, a digital institutional repository.

The key goal of the project is really more than archiving courses (and learning objects for that matter), but to promote interoperability among "collaboration learning environments" (CLE, e.g. Sakai), as well as with institutional digital repositories.

Work activity to date: developed a "CWSpace profile" for the IMS-CP Content Packaging standard; developed a custom application, "Content Exporter," on OCW's Microsoft CMS, to author IMS-CP packages; developed early version of Web Services for submission and dissemination of content packages; prototyped OCW courses being archived to DSpace; prototyped OCW courses being searched and retrieved from DSpace to another LMS at MIT, SloanSpace (dotLRN/LORS).

Now moving into the project's 2nd year, our work is to scale the prototypes up to production; to iterate development of Web Services for DSpace, to include a SOAP/WSDL and possibly an alternative WebDAV interface; to develop profiles for alternative content packaging standards (e.g. METS, other); to extend the IMS-CP profile to other MIT LMSs (SloanSpace; Stellar; Sakai); and to introduce a pluggable modules approach to DSpace for import/export of packages, and for application of metadata crosswalks.

As you can see, this is not directly related to how Sakai would publish OpenCourseWare sites (which was more the topic of the SEPP Conference session), but getting in touch with us about our work should be (we hope) something you'd consider if/when you are considering content packaging (especially IMS-CP), and when thinking (if you are! :^) about long-term archiving of your content, and possibly when thinking about Web Services for moving content between systems.

We would welcome any and all inquiries or comments, & Etc.

    Best,
    William Reilly

Also, for all those interested in opencourseware, I wanted to let you know of a conference that is being held in the Fall entitled: "Advancing the Effectiveness and Sustainability of Open Education". This conference is sponsored by the Hewlett foundation, and all of the major participants in opencourseware will be in attendance--including MIT, Johns Hopkins, Foothill De-Anza, etc.

John Seely Brown and Yochai Benkler will be the keynote speakers.
