NEW Pedagogy DG Meeting Notes at June SEPP in Baltimore

While much of the Sakai project effort is focused on developing an open source course management platform, the end goal is to improve teaching and learning. This section is devoted to the exploration of Sakai as a tool for learning.

Many of us became involved with the Sakai Project because we wanted better teaching and learning tools for everyone. We had a campus course management system but our innovative faculty, who wanted better teaching and learning web-tools, set up their own servers for home grown or open source applications that supported collaborative knowledge building, project-based learning, or other learning activities. The campus CMS served everyone with the basic functions of delivering syllabi and materials and some instructors used the discussion or quiz tool. But if anyone wanted to improve their teaching or the learning of their students with new, better tools, they set up their own systems.

The Sakai Project can change this. It provides a path for the development of better tools for teaching and learning. In the Sakai community, as we share our experiences in how to make best use of the system for effective, engaging learning activities, we can plan new tools that really do help learners.
