General Learning Research information that is helpful in designing tools for and specifying best practices in Sakai:
- How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience and School A summary of research on learning that was prepared for the National Academy of Sciences. The best introduction to the field.
How People Learn: Bridging Research and Practice (follow-on volume, much thinner)
- What Works Clearinghouse Although closely aligned with the current administration's obsession for controlled, experiemental studies, lots of useful information available here nonetheless.

M. Suzanne Donovan, John D. Bransford, and James W. Pellegrino, eds., How People Learn: Bridging Research and Practice (Washington, D.C.: National Academies Press, 1999); online edition available at <http://www.nap.edu/openbook/0309065364/html/>
While much of the book is focused on K-12 issues, I found still found it useful for the higher education context.
