Data Migration

This section is focused on migration of data from other systems (like BlackBoard and WebCT), as well as from older Sakai versions and/or other Sakai installations.

See also Sakai 2.0 Legacy Migration.

BlackBoard Data Migration

Zach Thomas of Texas State University has developed a utility that helps migrate BlackBoard data to Sakai. This is available in the contrib section of the Sakai subversion repository:

https://source.sakaiproject.org/contrib//migration/

Samigo Data Migration

Samigo does support IMS QTI 1.2 import/export at the assessment level. The IMS QTI spec is a bit fuzzy, so someone's IMS QTI 1.2 export may not work well with another's IMS QTI 1.2 import. UCDavis is working on an export from their legacy quiz builder to the current Samigo import functions. Also, we did have someone at Univ. of Applied Sciences - Luebeck write a BlackBoard -> Samigo IMS QTI 1.2 XSLT if you might be interested in that. (Marc Brierley, Stanford)

WebCT to Samigo Data Migration

Some of you have expressed interest in the quiz converter/generator we (Claremont Mckenna College in Southern California) developed for Sakai. Here is the link to this tool:

http://webapps.cmc.edu/sakai_quiz_tool

Our programmer Shawn Than and I developed this quiz converter since migrating quizzes from WebCT to Sakai is one of the biggest issues here in CMC. This tool creates a QTI XML file for each single-section WebCT quiz. It also converts the quizzes from Word Doc(as long as the questions are formatted in the required way).

If there is enough interest in the community, we plan to recode it and put it in the Contrib next semester.

Right now, it's been tested to work with multiple choice, true and false, and fill in blank questions in English and Spanish. It works in Firefox, IE, and Safari. However, if there are images, you will have to upload those images later in the Sakai quizzes one by one.

Please feel free to test it or use it. I'd appreciate any suggestions for further development. Also please let me know if you find any issues and bugs.

We are currently using Blackboard. Do you foresee in the future a migration tool for data transfer to Sakai?

A developer in one of the SEPP schools did produce an early version of a tool which would import MIME content from an exported Blackboard 5.5 course to a Sakai 1.0 worksite. So yes, it's likely that similar such tools might be developed and shared.

Among the 65-odd SEPP schools, I think there are roughly 15 currently running some version of Blackboard, and 8 or so running WebCT (don't quote me on those numbers, but I think that's the right ballpark). This general issue is therefore going to be on the minds of a significant fraction of the partner institutions.

So while a full tool is most likely not going to be a priority for core development (which will rather tend to focus on more general ways of simplifying migration and integration, irrespective of the particular legacy platform), it is an issue of concern to a number of schools, and is a likely focus for future development by some partner institutions.
