Innovation With the Sakai Podcasts Tool and iTunes U

Presenters: Kate Ellis and David Goodrum
Indiana University Bloomington
There are many effective ways of including podcasting into a course; and a focus on best practices can contribute to transforming the teaching and learning experience. In this session we will be looking at the podcasting initiatives at Indiana University and compare the two Sakai podcasting tools in production at IU.

This session will focus on good practices for teaching with technology, specifically podcasting. Podcasting is a new, emerging technology, but we have prior experience incorporating multimedia into teaching to enhance student learning. One source of guidance for active learning principles has been Chickering and Gamson's "Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education" and follow-up articles on using technology as a lever to implement these good practices.

Indiana University has recently launched a Faculty Podcasting program, funded by Apple and AT&T, to provide hardware and software to instructors who wish to examine and develop innovative methods of audio and/or video podcasting to enhance student learning. Another part of the initiative is to provide podcasting publishing services: the IU Portal (podcast.iu.edu) and iTunes U, which is now integrated into our implementation of Sakai.
